Timeline of courses

Spring I (May-June, 2009, ONLINE): Introductory activities and web design basics.

One course / 3 credits:

  • "Global Program Seminar": Introduction to HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Ruby on Rails; web design principles; brainstorming project ideas; preparing for the first residency.

Summer I (July 18 - August 8, 2009, in Geneva): Intensive courses in web development,  multimedia authoring, and educational project design & planning.  Students will develop a project plan and contacts with content-expert partners.

Three courses / 9 credits total:
  • "Foundations of Technology in Education": Key educational concepts related to the use of technology in education, with examples utilizing games, student design projects, character play, activism, and other "constructionist" approaches.
  • "Educational Project Design": Design and prototyping of the project that will be at the center of much of the rest of the program coursework.  Meetings with NGO partners.  Advanced web development techniques using Javascript and Ruby on Rails, along with other development platforms as needed.
  • "Digital Video Production": Broad introduction to the creation of video and other multimedia for educational purposes, using iMovie, MovieMaker, Audacity, and other editing tools.
Fall - Winter (September, 2009 - April, 2010 - ONLINE): Focus on project implementation, piloting, and analysis; cognate courses in information science. 

Fall: Two courses / 6 credits total.
  • "Enactment of Educational Programs": Project preparation and beginning of pilot in a school or other educational setting.
  • Cognate course in Information Science
Winter: Two courses / 6 credits total.
  • "Research Seminar": Study and analysis of project pilot, using a variety of research techniques.
  • Cognate course in Information Science
Spring II (May-June, 2010 - ONLINE): Bridge to second residency/connect project with core issues of teaching and learning.

One course / 3 credits:
  • "Contemporary Issues in Learning and Teaching": Connection of project pilot and analysis to larger issues of teaching and learning.

Summer II (July 17 - August 7, 2010,  in Geneva): Focus on reflection, revision, and dissemination. Includes capstone seminar.

Three courses/9 credits total:
  • "Advanced Educational Project Design": Focus on technical and programmatic refinements to one's project.  Development of security, project management, administrative, and long-term deployment features as needed.
  • "Leadership of Educational Programs": Focus on developing documentation, supporting materials, and dissemination strategies that will allow broader participation in the project.  Meetings with project partners as needed.
  • "Global Program Capstone Seminar": Reflection on, evaluation of, and synthesis of one's project, including plans for revision in the future.  Includes follow-up to spring Research Seminar course.
